Sunrooms are often thought of as a luxury only found within large estates and mansions however, sunrooms became a common home addition in the 1960’s and many single-family homes were advertised with the coveted addition to those living in suburban areas. The idea of a sunroom is to create an additional living space, accessible from the inside of your home boasting floor to ceiling glass walls allowing for a great space to enjoy natural light as well as feel as if you are enjoying the outdoors from the comfort of inside.

Do Sunrooms Benefit the Property?
If sunrooms are built properly and maintained, they can boost the value of your home exponentially which allows for not only a great investment, but also a great way to enjoy your home and boost your quality of living with the new feature. When purchasing a home with a sunroom or adding a sunroom to your home, it is important to remember that most sunrooms are not included within the home’s square footage unless it is heated and/or cooled by the same system within your home and not an additional form of climate control such as a space heater or window AC unit.
One of the biggest drawbacks to sunrooms is the potential for mold growth. Due to the room being constructed of glass, condensation is bound to accumulate and if not cleaned and maintained regularly, mold growth is nearly inevitable. Even if your sunroom was constructed or is being built properly, you should make sure to regularly check any joints and corners to ensure that the integrity of your room is maintained.

When it comes to adding a sunroom to your home there are a lot of different variables that could play a role in the cost of your new addition, however, a general rule of thumb is to try and budget for $300 per square foot for an all-season sunroom. While you can purchase a more “easy up” style of sunroom from many home improvement stores, it is important to remember that these styles are often not permanent, nor built to the same standard of the true home addition that you can enjoy for years to come.
